Long retired from his day job, he continues to compose and perform music while writing books in his unique blend of irreverent memoir and Socratic inquiry with the same inspiration he’d first found in songwriting. Comfortably Dumb: Embracing Uncertainty (non-fiction), Giant Steps Press, 2017

Life on the other side of age 60 looks different than when we are in our earlier decades. This is the voice used by author John Rullo in his newest title, Comfortably Dumb: Embracing Uncertainty. Sometimes hilarious, often thought provoking, Rullo questions all the teachings of his youth and takes you on a tour of some of the long-held standards of his heritage. Living through the tumultuous 1960s & 1970s made many a young person question “Why?” But this book holds even more of his background up to the light of examination. This review shares a favorite line from the end of the book: “Today I can humbly admit I didn’t know much then, and I know even less now.” A long, strange trip indeed!

Planet Love: The End of the World as We Knew It (fiction), Giant Steps Press, 2010

Be forewarned! Planet Love by John Rullo takes you on a journey from which you will not wish to return. This highly inspirational novel reads like a memoir and curiously, by the end, the reader is left with the feeling that every detail is God’s honest truth. The protagonist is John himself, a regular guy, an Everyman, retired, married with 2 children, who has played in a rock and roll band most of his life. One freezing cold night, after a gig, John has a split-second encounter with a UFO. As a result of this visitation, he experiences illuminations and metaphysical epiphanies that blow his and the reader’s mind! This book is deeply spiritual and simply profound. It left me believing that enlightenment is possible for everyone, not just holy sages who meditate on top of mountains. It left me believing Utopia is possible. It left me yearning for the place John takes us … back to the Garden!

The Three Extras (fiction), Giant Steps Press, 2013

This book is awesome: funny, poignant, irreverent, and touching. I loved it! A great story about friendship and the absurdity of Hollywood! A must read.

Under the Moon and Stars (fiction), Giant Steps Press, 2015

Once again, John Rullo’s words have captivated me. I finished the book in one day. I just couldn’t stop reading! In Under the Moon & Stars, protagonist Jude Star journeys through his life seeking understanding to the boundless questions of the universe. Along the way, he realizes he already has everything he needs. Is it divine intervention? Read the book and decide for yourself!
