Helen Izbor

Former Intern, Now Consultant & Bookmaker

ABOUT

Helen Izbor began her internship in 2020 as a fact-checker, proofreader, interviewer, copywriter, and co-curator of “Women in Writing.” Now a full-stack bookmaker, she guides every title from developmental edit through cover design, production, distribution, and launch. In addition, she consults with the collective on public relations, marketing, and digital strategies. Having spearheaded GSP’s recent rebrand and the successful second editions of New York at Twilight: Selected Tales of Gotham’s Weird & Eerie as well asRound Earth, Open Sky, Helen elevated both the content and the visual identity. She also has curated GSP’s Hot series on social media and helped build GSP’s DIY mentorship/internship program. Presently, she is assembling an Advisory Board to strengthen the press’s creative community and partnerships.

Having earned her B.A. from Hofstra University Honors College in Political Science and Criminal Justice, Helen completed four courses at Harvard University. Born in Moscow but of Ukrainian and Polish-Romanian heritage, she has spent the last eight years in New York, where she writes openly about contemporary Russia—work severely punishable under draconian Kremlin censorship. The ideas she has expressed in her essays and GSP blogposts may have cost her freedom and possibly life back in Moscow. Her manuscript, Russia’s Post-Imperial Trauma: What Putin Learned from Hitler, draws on primary sources and her fluency in Ukrainian, Russian, and English. Living and working in New York City, she continues to develop her social media skills in order to engage a larger community with her scholarship on Russian history as a cautionary tale in an increasingly binary democratic/autocratic world.
